Canterbury - the most famous city in Kent.

Canterbury

The cathedral city, whether searching for its heritage and history or its diverse invigorating day and night hospitality, Canterbury has it all. Canterbury boasts six museums and two castles, dating from the middle ages, and it’s most desirable possession, Canterbury Cathedral.

Canterbury Cathedral is in the heart of the city, the Cathedral dates back to 597 AD. Mother church to the Anglican Communion, it has attracted thousands of pilgrims. The Cathedral offers testimony to faith, history and culture.

Visit the famous Canterbury Tales Attraction and step back in time to experience the sights, and sounds of the Middle-Ages, in this reconstruction of 14th Century England. The Tale attraction is based on Canterbury’s famous literary classic Geoffrey Chaucer (England’s finest poet).

Take a river tour up to the small Franciscan Island at the end of the city also known as The Greyfriars. This island is home to a 13th century chapel which spans the river, and is the oldest example of Franciscan architecture in the country.

St. Augustine’s Abbey is one of Canterbury’s World Heritage sites and this impressive Abbey can be found outside the city walls. It was originally created in AD 597 by St Augustine, as a burial place for Anglo-Saxon Kings of Kent.

Canterbury, with all of its many attractions, also provides for ‘retail therapy’ within a 1 mile diameter. Shop in the spacious Whitefriars shopping development until end of the day and then go along to see the best West end shows at Canterbury’s Marlowe Theatre. The pedestrian streets of Canterbury are lined with restaurants, pubs and cafes, so at the end of the day - when you have completely exhausted yourself - you can relax with this varied mix of cuisine.

Don’t forget to visit the Canterbury Information Centre where you can save money by purchasing an Attractions Passport Ticket. This ticket allows you entry to the Cathedral, St Augustine’s Abbey, one of the cities museums and also the Canterbury Tales.
